Bamboo Polo Shirts

A polo asks something of the fabric that a tee never does: it has to hold a structured collar upright after a wash. Bamboo viscose is the least structural knit we work with, so a polo cut from it alone will give you a beautiful shirt with a collar that lies down and stays there.

The fix is not exotic. The collar and placket are knitted or interlined to a firmer specification than the body, and the body is usually a blend rather than pure viscose. That combination keeps the hand feel where the shirt touches skin and puts the structure where the shirt has to hold a line.

We state the collar construction on the quote alongside the body blend, because those two decisions are the entire difference between a polo that still looks tidy on its twentieth wear and one that looks tired by the third. Cheap bamboo polos skip both and are sold on the fibre name alone.

Because the fibre that makes the body feel good is the fibre least able to hold a shape. A collar knitted or interlined to a firmer specification keeps its line while the body stays soft. A polo cut entirely from pure viscose will have a collar that lies flat within a few washes.

Can these be embroidered?

Yes, and often they should be. Embroidery avoids the ink-on-a-fluid-knit problem entirely. It does need a backing suited to a soft knit so the stitches do not pull the fabric in, and we specify that rather than leaving it to the machine operator.
